What is body positivity?
Body positivity promotes the acceptance and appreciation of all body types, regardless of size, shape, appearance or physical abilities. It challenges societal norms and stereotypes surrounding beauty, advocating for inclusivity, self-love and respect for everyone.
At its core, body positivity seeks to dismantle harmful beauty standards enabled by the media, which often prioritises a narrow and unrealistic ideal of beauty. Instead, the positive body movement encourages everyone to embrace their unique bodies and celebrate their beauty. To do this, it’s important to practice self-acceptance and self-care, and to recognise that all bodies deserve respect and dignity.
Beyond individual empowerment, body positivity campaigns call for greater inclusivity and representation in media, fashion, healthcare and other industries. This includes challenging fat-shaming, ableism, gender roles and the lack of diversity in beauty standards.
This call for cultural transformation is already dismantling harmful practices and increasing inclusivity and diversity in the online and real world, thanks to the work of many dedicated people.
